    Historical Highlights…
In 1924 when Florida real estate was building up steam, Maitland Avenue was the main road between Sanford and Orlando (17-92 was built around 1937 on an entirely new right-of-way running east of Altamonte Springs and Longwood). Maitland wanted to grow and there was talk of building a “gate” across the Dixie Highway, later known as Black Bear Trail. To accomplish this “gate” a Chamber of Commerce was organized by the citizens who numbered approximately 500 at that time.
The Chamber of Commerce weathered the real estate crash of 1927, but when the banks closed in 1929, so did Maitland’s Chamber of Commerce. It was almost 30 years before its renaissance, and the Maitland Chamber has been serving the community and its members for 60 consecutive years.
